3 Killed, Including Baby and 12-Year-Old, in Spotsylvania Crash

A baby, a child and a woman were killed and four more people were badly injured in a car crash in central Virginia on Sunday. Virginia State Police said Monday that a 10-month-old boy, a 12-year-old girl and 32-year-old Ana D. Pascual, of Woodbridge, died in the crash. The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday in the 6200 block of Courthouse Road, a two-lane highway in Spotsylvania County, roughly halfway between Richmond and Washington, D.C.

Police said two vehicles were involved in the crash. They said 22-year-old Denia A. Brizeula-Pascual was driving a Honda Accord west on Courthouse Road when the car ran off the right shoulder. Brizeula-Pascual over-corrected, which caused the Honda to cross the center line and strike an Acura MDX that was headed east.

Brizuela-Pascual and a girl were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The three victims who died were also passengers in the Honda. “It sounded like an explosion went off,” nearby resident Kimberly Snellings said. “And it’s one of the most horrific things I’ve ever seen. It was really bad.” Snellings ran to help the crash victims. She said she could hear one child crying out from inside the Honda. “‘Mama, I’m alive!’ and repeatedly. Over and over and over again,” she said.

Snellings said she helped the couple in the Acura SUV and the man had broken out his window to try to get to his wife. “She couldn’t get out of the seat belt and her door wouldn’t open,” she said. Investigators said the 58-year-old man driving the Acura and a 55-year-old woman passenger, both residents of Fairfax, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Police said the adults and children were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and the baby was properly secured in a car seat.

Virginia State Police are investigating the crash.
