Bennett College raise more than $8 Million Dollars for their accreditation

Bennett College, the first all women’s Historically Black College & University, just announced that they have reached more than $8 million in order to keep  their accreditation and win the appeal against the Southern Association of Colleges  and Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) by proving to that they are financially stable to the accrediting body.

Phyllis Dawkins, Bennett’s President, stated in front of hundreds of students, alumni, and donors at the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel that the the fundraiser efforts from all over the country has raised a total of more than $8.2. million. Their intended goal was to raise $5 million.

 

Other HBCUs, including Bennett College, have drastically been affected by the Great Recession of 2008 and the alterations to the Parent PLUS Loan program from 2010-2012. Students who primarily rely on financial aid to attend school and receive an education were deterred due to their financial situations. Lodriguez Murray , the Vice President of Public Policy & Government Affairs for the United Negro College Fund, stated the changes to the Parent PLUS Loan  have decreased the amount of students attending HBCUs by 40,000.

Bennett will formally appeal to SACSCOC, they are scheduled for a hearing on February 18th in Atlanta. Until then, the college will
