Do you remember when the world went insane over chicken sandwiches? If you don’t live under a rock, you may be able to recall when Popeyes dropped their famous chicken sandwich in August 2019. As much I stand for a three-piece combo at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, they are not even close to the majestic flavor of the gourmet chicken sandwiches from Roaming Rooster DC!
Roaming rooster’s fried chicken is a real gem of the city! The Roaming Rooster family prides itself on only serving free-range, grain-fed chicken that is cooked to perfection. They started in 2015 with just one food truck and have been expanding their footprint across the DMV ever since! They now have three operating food trucks and a brand new location in Northeast DC. The Food Page and Taste DMV were blessed with all four of their amazing sandwiches, and we are already counting down until our next visit!
Here’s our review:
Fried chicken sandwiches are typically rated on the following rubric (yes, it’s that serious):
The Seasoning: It’s all about that batter! The seasoning of the batter is 80% of the battle when it comes to making a great chicken sandwich. The fried chicken should be flavorful by itself without any help of toppings or condiments.
The Crunch: It is truly an art to be able to fry chicken with the perfect crunch on the outside AND maintain the juicy tenderness of the meat on the inside.
The Sauce: Most chicken sandwiches come with a signature sauce (spicy aioli, buffalo sauce, honey, etc.), or a specific heat level (Nashville hot, spicy, mild). Get the sauce/spice right, and you’re on your way to a phenomenal chicken sandwich!
The Bun: Whether its brioche, multi-grain, or even a doughnut- it is essential to select the right bun to complement your chicken sandwich. I promise it makes a difference!
How does Roaming Rooster’s fried chicken sandwiches score, you ask?
TENS ACROSS THE BOARD!
Roaming Rooster’s fried chicken sandwiches are experts when it comes to combining that special crunchy batter, and the juicy tenderness of the meat to create a sensational foodie experience. After a night of deliberation, I decided that my favorite of the four was the Honey Butter Fried Chicken Sandwich! The chicken was smothered in honey butter and complemented with melty cheddar cheese. I added extra bacon to go atop of all that goodness, and it was delicious. I had the honey butter chicken sandwich made the “medium” heat level, and the spice was just enough to give you the kick you need while not overpowering the flavor of the well-seasoned chicken. I predict there will be much more to come from the Roaming Rooster family and staff. I wouldn’t be surprised if another location opens up in on the other ends of D.C. Roaming Rooster is a must-visit if you are in the city and love fried chicken as much as the rest of us!
