Baltimore, MD – Coppin State women’s basketball faced one of the nation’s toughest challenges on Saturday, falling to No. 2 South Carolina in a non-conference matchup that tested the Eagles’ resilience and growth. The Eagles opened the game with energy and composure, working to establish rhythm against the defending national powerhouse. South Carolina’s depth and physicality eventually took control, but Coppin State continued to compete, pushing through every possession and fighting on both ends of the floor.

Despite the final score, the Eagles showed flashes of strong execution, particularly in their defensive rotations and ball movement. Coppin State battled on the glass, contested shots, and refused to back down against a team loaded with elite talent and size. Several players stepped up with confident offensive possessions, attacking the rim and creating opportunities in transition.

Tessa Johnson scored 17 points for the Gamecocks, shooting 5 of 8 from 3-point range. Ta’Niya Latson had 15 points, five assists and six steals. Khila Morris led Coppin State with 20 points. South Carolina improved to 28-0 against HBCU teams under coach Dawn Staley. It was the fourth time in that span the Gamecocks faced one on the road.

Showed Grit, Togetherness and Fight

Facing constant pressure, Coppin State used the game as a measuring stick, gaining valuable experience against top-tier competition. The matchup highlighted the program’s commitment to growth, toughness, and preparation as conference play continues. While South Carolina’s depth proved too much over 40 minutes, the Eagles left the floor with lessons that will translate into MEAC competition. Games like this serve as building blocks, strengthening confidence and sharpening execution for the remainder of the season.

Coppin State will now shift its focus back to conference play, aiming to apply the experience gained against one of the best teams in the country as they continue their pursuit of improvement and consistency.
