Country House Wins Kentucky Derby After The Disqualification of Maximum Security

For the first time in history, a horse has been disqualified due to a foul on the track. Maximum Security was disqualified for interference.

Maximum Security led most of the race but towards the final turn before the home stretch, he made contact with the other horses. Some think its due to the condition of the track and how muddy it was due to the rain. Others say it comes from Maximum Security’s lack of experience.

The three stewards came together and made a decision to disqualify Maximum Security after reviewing video and interviewing jockeys for 20 minutes.

The horse was replaced to the 17th spot for veering out and stacking up the horses War of Will, Long Range Toddy, and Bodexpress according to Equibase.com.

War of Will moved to 7th place from 8th place, Long Range Toddy to 16th from 17th, and Bodexpress from 14th to 13th.

Country House was then named the winner. Before the race, the horse had a 65-1 odds to win. Its the first stakes win for the horse.

Maximum Security’s Jockey Flavien Prat has since filed an objection with the stewards. Watch the full race below and check out NBC Sports discuss the decision.
