D.C. named 4th most expensive U.S. city

The cost of the living in the United States has risen, causing many residents to leave major cities for more inexpensive places.

Here is the list of U.S. most expensive cities to live in:

  • New York City
    • New York City consistently tops the polls of most expensive U.S. cities to live in. According to Investopedia, NYC is approximately 120 percent higher than the national average. Home prices average about $1 million across all five boroughs.
  • San Francisco
    • The median home price in San Francisco is over $1.3 million, nearly a half-million increase from 2012, according to Zillow.com. The median rent is about $4, 312 per month. Many residents have taken drastic measures to remain living in the area while others have decided to pack up and leave together.
  • Honolulu
    • Hawaii’s capital city ranks has one of the top five most expensive cities in the U.S., given the island’s isolation. Compared to others places within the country, residents in Honolulu can expect to pay 55 percent more on groceries and 71 percent more on utilities.
  • Washington, D.C.
    • The cost of living in the Nation’s capital is approximately 60 percent higher than the rest of the country. Zillow.com reported that the average home price is more than $636,000, a 3 percent increase in value within a course of one year. The average rent price is D.C. is $2,700.
  • Boston
    • Bostons hosts some of the country’s most classic colonial landmarks along with some of the most desirable real estate in the country. According to Investopedia, cost of groceries and health care cost in Boston surpasses the national average by more than 20 percent. The average home price is approximately $630,000, with the median rent being somewhat less than $3,000.
