Historically Black College Alabama State University’s basketball team have filled their head coaching vacancy with former NBA All-Star and NBA Champion Mo Williams.

Mo Williams played 13 years in the NBA for the Utah Jazz, Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Hornets. In 818 career games, he averaged 13.2 points and 4.9 assists making the All-Star team in 2009 and winning the NBA championship in 2016 both with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Previously serving as an assistant coach for Cal State Northridge, Williams will take over an Alabama State Hornets basketball team that was previously coached by Lewis Jackson who served as head coach for the team for 15 years.

The Hornets have struggled finishing with a record below .500 in each of the past five seasons. In the past 10 years, the team only had two seasons with a .500 record or better and only won 10 games SWAC conference games in three seasons.

Williams is now one of two former NBA players who are head coaches of SWAC basketball teams along with former NBA guard Lindsey Hunter who is the coach of the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.
