Walter Mondale was a former Senator, Vice President, and Democratic nominee for President and has died at age 93, according to TMZ.

Mondale died on Monday in Minneapolis, according to his family.

Mondale was born and raised in Minnesota and served as the state’s U.S. Senator from 1964 to 1976 while contributing to civil rights and social programs under Lyndon Johnson’s presidency.

During his lifetime, he served as VP for Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981 and in 1984 he was the Democratic nominee but lost against Ronald Reagan.

Despite the loss, Mondale made history when he put Geraldine Ferraro on the ticket making her the first woman to run for VP on a major party’s ticket.
