George Mason Outlasts VCU 86–80 in A-10 Rivalry Showdown

George Mason delivered a statement win in Atlantic 10 play, edging rival VCU 86–80 in a hard-fought, high-energy contest that lived up to the intensity of the matchup. From the opening tip, both teams traded blows, with neither side able to gain firm control in a first half defined by physical defense and timely shot-making. The Patriots carried a slim 38–37 advantage into the break, setting the stage for a tense second half.
Coming out of halftime, George Mason began to separate itself with poise and balance. The Patriots outscored VCU 48–43 over the final 20 minutes, leaning on contributions from across the roster rather than relying on a single scorer. Jermahri Hill and Riley Allenspach paced the offense with 16 points apiece, while Kory Mincy added 15 points to keep steady pressure on the Rams’ defense. Masai Troutman chipped in 13 points, helping George Mason build an early second-half cushion.
As VCU attempted to rally, Jahari Long delivered in key moments, finishing with 14 points and knocking down crucial shots down the stretch to halt any momentum shifts. The Patriots’ composure in late-game situations proved decisive, as they consistently answered VCU runs with timely buckets.
VCU showed plenty of fight, led by Lazar Djokovic’s game-high 23 points and a strong all-around effort from Terrence Hill Jr., who finished with 16 points and six rebounds. Despite flashes of offensive rhythm, the Rams struggled to match George Mason’s depth and consistency in the second half, a factor that ultimately swung the game.
The Outcome
The loss stings for VCU, who had opportunities to seize control early but couldn’t sustain execution when it mattered most. For George Mason, the victory represents more than just bragging rights—it’s a confidence-boosting win that reinforces their standing in Atlantic 10 play and signals their ability to close out tough games against quality opponents.
