Georgetown Falls to St. John’s on New Year’s Eve
Georgetown men’s basketball came up short on New Year’s Eve, falling 95–83 to a sharp-shooting St. John’s squad at Capital One Arena. Despite a competitive effort and strong offensive production, the Hoyas were unable to keep pace with the Red Storm’s perimeter scoring, dropping to 9–5 overall and 1–2 in BIG EAST play.
Sophomore guard KJ Lewis delivered a standout performance for Georgetown, pouring in a career-high 27 points to lead all scorers. Lewis was aggressive from start to finish, knocking down eight field goals and converting a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. He also added three rebounds and three steals, consistently applying pressure on both ends of the floor.
Malik Mack also reached double figures with 18 points, connecting on four three-pointers and dishing out eight assists to pace Georgetown’s ball movement. The Hoyas finished the night with 15 assists and shot an efficient 45.9 percent from the field, including 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Georgetown showed resilience early, using a 9–0 run in the first half to seize momentum and trade leads with the Red Storm. The Hoyas entered the locker room within striking distance, trailing by just five at halftime after shooting efficiently and matching St. John’s basket for basket.

However, St. John’s caught fire from beyond the arc in the second half, opening up a double-digit lead that proved difficult to overcome. Georgetown continued to battle, but the Red Storm’s perimeter shooting and timely baskets maintained separation down the stretch.
Jayden Fort provided a strong presence off the bench for the Hoyas, pulling down a career-high eight rebounds. Georgetown narrowly lost the rebounding battle, 36–33, while forcing 11 turnovers and continuing to compete defensively throughout the contest.
Despite a late push, Georgetown was unable to close the gap as St. John’s controlled the final minutes to secure the 12-point victory. While the result marked a setback in conference play, the Hoyas’ offensive efficiency and individual performances offered positives moving forward.
