Trying to expand your taste in music? Check out rising artist Tazi from PG County. He’s a rising independent artist representing Cameroon. Tazi is exclusively signed to a 100% ownership deal by his own record label 237 Entertainment & VeyeB Records. Blending classic with new age hip hop sounds and fusing them with afro-centric melodies and ad-libs, Tazi manages to creates very heart songs. Tazi believes that the DMV is where the melting pot is at its hottest, where all cultures should blend well. In 2019, he dropped his highly anticipated album 10-17, not an homage to legendary hip-hop rapper Gucci Mane, but to acknowledge his birthday. Tazi uses the title 10-17 as a way to define inception, the beginning, the first step in an illustrious music career that he is building under the umbrella of 237 entertainment. His singles “Drippin” and “You Know” would go on to be the most streamed songs on 10-17 and a crowd favorite at live performances.
In 2020, Tazi followed upon his album with an EP titled “Set Your Intentions” (SYI)where he emphasizes clearing the bullshit in your life and trailblazing for what you want in life and let the rest figure itself out. Tazi is set to release his second EP entitled SYI2 this year. Checkout our exclusive Q& A down below.
Q: Who inspired you to make music?
Tazi: My father
Q: Who would you describe the music you typically create?
Tazi: Heartfelt, soulful, emotional, truthful
Q: You recently released your latest single “Connect 4”, can you talk about the inspiration and meaning behind the song?
Tazi:Connect 4″ is a very egotistical-driven song. Selling dreams to 4 women at the same time and having the audacity to ask for sympathy from these women. Having the audacity to feel as though you’re owed some type of explanation as for their departure. That can be a man’s ego at times, complicated.
Q: What is your creative process like?
Tazi: Once upon a time, I had all the time in the world to create music, but ever since I started running a company, I am very intentional in my creative process. It is very organic. Some nights I get to the studio and nothing comes to me and some days, God visits me while I’m driving and blesses me with inspiration and I get straight to writing then recording.
Q: Tell us about the first song you ever wrote?
Tazi: The first song I ever wrote was in middle school. I was trying to impress this girl, Ann Marie Daley, she was so fine and I was in the friend zone, best friend zone if we’re being specific. It was a cool lil rhyme I wrote to battle her boyfriend in a rap battle to prove to her that I was worthy of being worthy (that’s how I processed in my middle school head of course). I won the battle, never got the girl though. Shoutout to Ann Marie Daley though.
Q: Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Tazi: HOV, Meek, Ross, Drake, Baba Folarin, Burna Boy, Longue Longue.
Q: What is one message you would give to your fans?
Tazi: You have to love this thing of ours that we call art to truly reap the benefits. Money is the by-product of great work.
Q: What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Tazi: Medical school hands down. I was a darn good science student.
Q: Where have you performed?
Tazi: I have opened up for Grammy-nominated artist Davido in Denver Colorado. I have done countless pop-up shows in Denver Colorado, Market St knew me very well. I have performed at Skylevel Friday for my album release party.
Q: Which Famous musicians do you admire?
Tazi: Longue Longue, Jay-Z, Petit Pays, Burna Boy, Meek Mill, Kanye West, Nipsey Hussle, Drake, Notorious BIG, Puff, Alo, Tazi

Q: What challenges have you encounter since being a music artist and how have you overcome them?

Tazi: Balancing business and art is hard. It doesn’t mix actually. They must be separated. That’s why Dame & Biggs managed the ROC so HOV can create in peace. Secondly, In this lovely city of mine, unfortunately, the stigma is the real can only come in one form, a form that is most common to people indigenous to the area. I can speak eloquently and still speak the truth that can connect with my people. I can dress in a way that connects with me and still connect with my people. But at the same time, that’s what makes the DMV the DMV.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Tazi: If you can’t manage and account for $25 then you can’t manage and account for $100,000,000.

Q: What’s next for you?

Tazi: Let’s be very clear. I don’t work 16-18 hour days to be mediocre. Only a select few people in this world are built for this life, and if you’re not, it’s no knock to you, I wish this on no man. But, My goal is for the motherland and America to marry each other and live in harmony. The goal is Faith, Love & Family. The goal is to sit at the top of mount Olympus and be proud of your contribution to the world and hope that those behind you carry the torch and run even farther. The goal is for you to know that there once was a man who bore my last name and spoke wise words into the ears of his children and me, my brother and sister were a product of those wise words
