It’s The First Day of Summer: Tips To Achieving Your Ultimate Summer Glow

Published

on

It’s here, it’s officially the first day of summer!

We all know what that means… HOT GIRL summer is in full effect! Get ready for a season full of tan lines, bronzing, and nights you never want to end. Perfect time to update your skincare routine, and give your skin everything it needs. Here are a few tips to keeping that melanin poppin’ all summer long!

Do You Know Your Skin Type?

A good skincare routine starts with knowing what your skin wants and needs. Knowing your skin type is essential in curating the best routine that your skin will love. Start by asking yourself a few of these questions:  Is my skin often dry, flaky or tight after washing? If so, you may have dry skin. Does my skin get oily or shiny throughout the day? If so, you may have oily skin. What if my skin is neither tight or oily? If so, you may have normal/combination skin. Knowing your skin type also helps to spend less on products that won’t work, and may harm or irritate your skin.

Pro Tip: When trying a new product, use the trial/sample size before investing in the full size. Save your coins sis!

Use Products With Sunscreen or SPF

Myth: Sunscreen is used to only prevent sunburn and unwanted tanning. In fact, sunscreen is even more important for women of color. Using products with sunscreen or SPF added in the formulation is key! These products help prevent discoloration, hyper-pigmentation, uneven skin tone, acne, dark spots, scarring – even early aging.

Pro Tip: Using a tinted moisturizer with SPF keeps your skin hydrated while giving you that “no makeup” makeup look, and protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Be Mindful of Your Hair Products

Women, even men of color are prone to falling victim to “pomade acne”. Pomade acne occurs when oil-based hair/grooming products migrate from the scalp into the facial skin. Be mindful of the area in which you apply your essential oils. Try applying oils toward the center and ends of your hair to avoid clogging your facial pores.

Pro Tip: Wash your head wrap, scarf, and pillowcases at least once a week to avoid a build-up of excess oil.

Be Gentle and Love The Skin You’re In

When washing your face, use two fingers to gently cleanse in circular motions. Rinse by splashing water on your face. Pat dry, do not wipe. Be consistent with your skincare routine and incorporate it into your weekly self care regimen!

Pro Tip: Multi-masking is beneficial in treating all areas of your skin at once. It is okay to mix and match! Trust what your skin is telling you and give it what it needs.
