Ivy League Canceled Their Men & Women’s Basketball Conference Tournaments

Ivy League

With the coronavirus spreading rapidly, the Ivy League decided to cancel it’s men and women’s basketball conference tournament.

The games were scheduled for this Friday to Sunday at the Lavietes Pavilion in Cambridge. Instead of the four-team tournament battle, the Ivy League will award its automatic NCAA bid to the regular season champions. That includes the Princeton women’s team and Yale men’s team. All tickets will be refunded.

Ivy League executive director Robin Harris had this to say on the cancelation.

“Regrettably, the information and recommendations presented to us from public health authorities and medical professionals have convinced us that this is the most prudent decision. – Robin Harris

This is the first D-1 tournament to be canceled due to the coronavirus. The NCAA tournament, however, will still play to games at the scheduled sites.

“As we have stated, we will make decisions on our events based on the best, most current public health guidance available. Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America, nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly.” – NCAA
