Joe Biden Chooses Kamala Harris as his Running Mate in the 2020 Presidential Election

After much speculation, Joe Biden has finally chosen his running mate, who will serve as his potential vice president should he be elected into office in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election…California State Senator Kamala Harris.

Joe Biden considered many other women for his Vice Presidential running mate, including former U.S. Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, House Representative members Karen Bass and Val Demings, and President Obama’s former national security adviser Susan Rice.

Born and raised in Oakland, California, Kamala Harris is a graduate of Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and economics. She also has a law degree from the University of California, Hastings.

In 2003, after years serving as a deputy district attorney in California, Kamala Harris was elected District Attorney of San Francisco, making her the first African American to serve as district attorney in the state of California.

In 2011, she was elected Attorney General of California in California, serving for two terms before running Senate following the retirement of 24-year California Senator Barbara Boxer.

In January 2019, Kamala Harris announced she would be running for President in the 2020 Presidential election, although she would be forced to withdraw her nomination in December, citing lack of funds.

Harris being picked as Joe Biden’s running mate, makes her the first woman of color to be nominated for national office by a major party.

Kamala Harris, being chosen as the Vice Presidential candidate, has been met with widespread support from fellow Democratic dignitaries voicing their approval of the move on Twitter.

President Barack Obama had this to say about Kamala Harris being picked by Joe Biden as his running mate,

“Joe Biden nailed this decision. By choosing Senator Kamala Harris as America’s next vice president, he’s underscored his own judgment and character.” He continued by saying she is “an ideal partner to help him tackle the very real challenges America faces right now and in the years ahead.”

Howard University President Wayne Frederick said this in a statement regarding Joe Biden’s decision,

Today is an extraordinary moment in the history of America and of Howard University. Senator Kamala Harris’ selection as the Democratic vice presidential candidate represents a milestone opportunity for our democracy to acknowledge the leadership Black women have always exhibited, but has too often been ignored. We are proud to call Howard University alumna Kamala Harris a member of our HU family. As Senator Harris embarks upon this new chapter in her life, and in our country’s history, she is poised to break two glass ceilings in our society with one fell swoop of her Howard hammer! The HBCU community and I will be watching.”

Joe Biden said this in an email regarding choosing Kamala Harris as his Vice Presidential candidate, “I’ve decided that Kamala Harris is the best person to help me take this fight to Donald Trump and Mike Pence and then to lead this nation starting in January 2021.”

One person who was not happy with Joe Biden choosing Kamala Harris as his running mate is Biden’s competitor Donald Trump who had very harsh words for Kamala Harris in a press briefing.

Kamala Harris and Joe Biden will make their first public appearance together tomorrow as they are expected to appear in Wilmington, Deleware, for an event.
