Looking for some new treats to satisfy your taste buds?  Checkout Sweet Medley, a black-owned bakery company turning your visions into reality sweetly! We had the pleasure of speaking with the CEO, Alexis Medley, a 23-year-old self-taught baker from Washington, D.C. who loves to challenge herself to create new things.

Q: How did the idea for your business come about?

Sweet Medley: I started baking as a way to raise money to help with my uncle’s cancer treatment. The fundraising went so well that I just continued to bake and from there the idea to turn baking into a business was born.

Q: What service does your business offer?

Sweet Medley: We offer cakes, cupcakes, a variety of chocolate-covered treats, pies, and treat table/party décor services.

Q:  What was your key driving force to become a baker & event planner?

Sweet Medley: After seeing how well the fundraising went and how much people enjoyed my desserts it pushed me to learn all that I could about baking. Also, since I have been perfecting my craft, I started to become more involved in events. I started with just the treat tables and now have decorated entire events.

Q:  How did you come up with the name of your company?

Sweet Medley: The name for the company was created using my last name which means a diverse assortment or mixture and since I make desserts, I added the sweet to the beginning.

Q:  What previous work or study experience do you have as a baker?

Sweet Medley: I had no prior experience as a baker.

Q:  What are your favorite techniques you use daily as a baker?

Sweet Medley: Working with cakes I use so many different techniques from day to day. My favorite and the one I use the most must be getting cakes as smooth as possible. It takes strategy, the right tools, and a lot of patience! Even though it can be nerve-racking the ending result blows my mind.

Q:  How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?

Sweet Medley: I rely heavily on social media and word-of-mouth advertisement to market my business. So far, social media has been the most successful.

Q:  How many hours a day do you work on average?

Sweet Medley: I spend about 4 hours a day baking on average.

Q:  Tell us how you organize, plan and prioritize your work in the baking profession?

Sweet Medley: A bakery runs on the organization and great planning skills. We have plastic organizers everywhere to separate everything from our colors, tips, piping bags, boxes, etc. To organize our orders we use the google calendar and color code everything we do.
Q:  Describe your most challenging baking project. How did you overcome it?

Sweet Medley: The most challenging baking project that I’ve had to date was a three-tier cake. I normally do one- or two-tier cakes but I wanted to push my limits. A three-tier cake isn’t the easiest to achieve. You have made sure that

Q:  What motivates you?

Sweet Medley: The happiness that I can grant each customer motivates me to continue baking.

Q:  How do you generate new ideas?

Sweet Medley: My new ideas come from things that I see daily. I may see new things via social media and try to recreate them.

Q:  What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?

Sweet Medley: I honestly don’t have a fear at all. I try not to live life or make decisions with a fearful mind.

Q:  What are your ideals?

Sweet Medley: I have one main ideal which would be to buy back the building my grandfather’s corner store was in and turn it into my bakery.
Q:  How do you define success?
Sweet Medley: Success to me is putting your best self forward at every task. Success is pushing when it gets hard, smiling when you want to cry, and celebrating when you need to. Success is being happy!
Q:  Have you ever developed or improved a recipe? How did you do it and how did customers respond?
Sweet Medley: Yes, every 6 months we take a look at our pros and cons to see what we can work to get the best version. Our buttercream recipe has changed many times over the years and the better it gets,  the more the customer likes them!
Q:  What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
Sweet Medley: My favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur is being able to make people’s dreams come to life with what I love to do. Being able to call whatever shots for my business. While making money at the same time.
Q:  What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Sweet Medley: One of the most satisfying moments in my business was when business picked up. After I graduated college, I was able to focus more of my attention on my business which showed once orders started picking up.
