Memorial Day Visits by Trump and Biden

Published

on

Monday afternoon set forth two visits from President Trump in commemoration of Memorial Day. Yet, President Trump’s speech came with much discouragement from Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young, with the city still under stay-at-home orders as mentioned to CNN.

Monday morning, President Donald Trump started with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Without commentary, the President laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with Vice President Mike Pence, First Lady Melania Trump, and cabinet members.

Later Monday afternoon, the President made a trip to Baltimore’s Fort McHenry with a speech stating, “As our brave warriors have shown us from our nation’s earliest days, in America, we are the captains of our own fate.” The President went on to discuss COVID-19, service members, and families lost against the “invisible enemy.”

With a little under 200 spectators with masks, Trump spoke without a mask. Trump went on to say, “Tens of thousands of service members and national guardsmen are on the front lines of our war against this terrible virus, caring for patients, delivering critical supplies and working night and day to save our citizens.”

As recovery plans continue, the international humanitarian response plan for COVID-19 came from the UN. In contrast, recent blocks came from the Trump administration due to disagreements on reproductive health additions. Various NGOs have spoken out against such blocks in UN resolutions and the need to expand reproductive services for all people even during COVID-19.

As Memorial day brings reflection of the current global pandemic, discussion of local response and needs continues. The particular conversation of race, gender, and human rights continue as issues of public health, unemployment, policing, and recovery plans continue.

With face mask, Presidential Candidate Joe Biden also took a holiday as a chance to lay a wreath at the Delaware Memorial Bridge Veteran’s Memorial Park with partner Jill Biden.
