Morgan State University Acquires Sharone Wright Jr. From Wake Forest

HBCU basketball teams have had a great summer acquiring big name talent and this continues as the Morgan State Bears have just acquired transfer guard Sharone Wright Jr. from Wake Forest.

Sharone Wright Jr., son of former NBA player Sharone Wright Sr., played high school basketball for West Florence High School and Legacy Early College High School in South Carolina. In the 2016-2017 season, Wright was named to the South Carolina All-State team in his junior year at West Florence.

Coming out of high school, he was ranked 30th among all shooting guards in the high school class of 2018 by ESPN making him a four-star recruit and would go on to join the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Sharone had a solid freshman season with Wake Forest where he averaged 7.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 22.2 minutes per game in 31 games and 20 starts.

It was in his sophomore season where things started to get problematic for the guard. Sharone was forced to miss multiple games in November and February due to suffering from an illness and serving a suspension handed down to him by Wake Forest. He finished the season averaging just 2.2 points in 9.2 minutes per games playing just 20 games with no starts.

Wright joins a Morgan State Bears team that finished this past season with an overall record of 15-16 and a MEAC conference record of 9-7 under Kevin Broadus in his first year as the team’s head coach.

The Bears have not finished with a .500 record or better since the 2011-2012 season and have not won the MEAC since 2010.

Wright’s transfer to Morgan State is one of many huge moves with HBCU basketball teams acquiring top high school talent or transfers from top Division I schools.

Earlier today, five-star prospect Makur Maker announced he was committing to Howard University while Norfolk State acquired Mustafa Lawrence transferring from Fresno State as well as four-star recruit Nate Tabor who previously committed to St. John’s.
