Norfolk State Acquires Liberty University Transfer Tayvion Land

HBCU sports have had a great July with top talent in high school committing and talent from top Division I schools transferring to their program. This trend continues as the Norfolk State Spartans football team has just landed (no pun intended) former Liberty University defensive end Tayvion Land.

In a statement released on Twitter, Land revealed his reasoning for leaving Liberty University was due to “racial insensitivity” displayed by leadership at the University. He concluded his statement by saying,

I pray that I am able to be provided with a opportunity at a new school that respects my culture and provides a comfortable environment.”

Born in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Tayvion Land played his high school football at Ocean Lakes High School in his hometown. There he was named to the first team All-State and first team All-Tidewater teams as well as awarded Defensive Player of the Year.

Coming out of high school, Land was ranked a four-star recruit by ESPN.com receiving offers from Auburn, Boston College, Clemson, FAU, Maryland, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. He would commit to join the Liberty Flames making him the first four-star recruit to commit to the school in its history.

In his one season with Liberty, Land finished with 23 total tackles and a forced fumble as the Flames finished with a record of 8-5 giving the team the 2nd-best overall record among Independent schools. They also qualified for a Bowl game which they would go on to win beating Georgia Southern 23-16 in the AutoNation Cure Bowl.

Tayvion Land is not the only former Division I talent to transfer to Norfolk State University as the Spartans’ basketball team acquiring Mustafa Lawrence a transfer from Fresno State as well as four-star recruit Nate Tabor who commited to the school while also receiving offers from Auburn, Connecticut, LSU and Texas Tech.

The Norfolk State Spartans’ football team will be looking to have their first winning season since the 2011 season when they finished an overall record of 9-3.
