Norfolk State Hires First Woman Athletic Director Melody Webb

Norfolk State University’s Athletic department has just made history as they have hired Melody Webb as athletic director making her the first woman to serve at the position for the University. She will be replacing Marty Miller who held the position for 15 years now moving on to a new senior leadership role in school president Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston’s administration.

Born in Chicago, Melody Webb attended Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. While at Savannah State, she participated in multiple sports including volleyball in which she was a four-year letter and was team captain for three years, track and field in which she was all-conference and basketball.

Webb then went on to earn her master’s in public administration, public policy and management from Bowie State University and is now working on attaining her doctorate in sports management from the United States Sports Academy which she is set to complete in December 2020.

Melody Webb’s career in college athletics began in 2004 when she served as the associate athletic director and senior women’s administrator for Elizabeth City State until 2006.

From there, Webb would move on to University of Maryland in College Park where she served as the athletics business manager for the Department of Athletics until 2012. In the midst of her time at UMD, she was also serving as assistant athletics director for budget and finance at George Washington University a position she held from 2010-2012.

Melody Webb has been with Norfolk State since 2014 where she held the position of senior associate athletics director for administration and senior women’s administrator.
