Over the past several years, the sport of gymnastic has been bombarded with scandals. On November 5, 2018, the USOC (United States Olympic Committee) announced that they will be decertify USA Gymnastics as the national governing body for the sport, at the Olympic level. Gymnastic needs a birth and Dominique Dawes is helping to create it. She is one the most decorated Olympic gold medalists of all time and this upcoming Spring she will be opening the Dominique Dawes Gymnastics Academy.

The Dominique Gymnastics Academy will introduce the sport of gymnastics in a more supportive and healthy environment. Although scandal and mistrust is a factor in the gymnastic scene, Dawes is working to change the narrative and expose the younger generation to the sport that has gave so much to her. She is a 10-year member of the US National Gymnastics team, known as “Awesome Dawesome”, for her amazing artistry and strength. Dawes was the first African-American, of any nationality or gender, to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics. She hopes to leave her legacy through her academy, one that will impact many more young people.

Dawes is a three-time Olympian who grew in Silver Spring, MD. She will be opening the Dominique Dawes Gymnastics Academy in her Montgomery County in Spring of 2020. Dawes plan on opening more locations across Montgomery County in the future but the present is worth celebrating. The academy’s class schedule has yet to be released and already over 100 people has signed up. Despite the recent sport troubles, there is still a high interest for gymnastics and Dawes is devoted to creating an environment to safely nurture it.
