The DMV Daily Athlete of the Month: Stephen “Swifty” Smith
For the month of December we have the pleasure of making Stephen “Swifty” Smith our Athlete of the Month.
Stephen Frances “Swifty” Smith was born on July 22, 1985 in Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom. He is the younger brother of profession boxer Paul Smith, and the older brother profession boxers Liam and Callum Smith. The 33-year-old boxer currently holds the WBC Silver Super Featherweight title.
Smith is a two-weight champion with natural skills and bloodthirsty dedication that makes him the fighter that he is. He nicknamed himself ‘Swifty” after one of the turtles name from his childhood obsession Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. That is also where Callum got his nickname “Mundo” from, which mean ‘world’ in Spanish.
In December 2017, Smith suffered from horrible ear injury in the ninth round against Francisco Vargas. During the fight, Vargas charged at him with his head that caused the injury which almost ripped off his ear. Although the top half of his ear was split down the middle, Swifty wanted to continue the fight right before the referee intervened. Referee Russell Mora stepped in during the round and immediately called off the fight.
Smith was immediately rushed to the hospital where he received stitches for his injury. As a result, he lost the fight by a technical decision. Swifty was determined to beat Vargas so he can have a chance of winning the third world title shot.
