The EatOkra App- A Guide To Over 2500+ Black-Owned Restaurants Across the Country!

There has been an increase in revenue for black-owned businesses across the country amid the Black Lives Matter movement. We love to see it! Black creatives and black voices in all industries are being heard and finally appropriately credited for their work… it’s about time! Two pioneers that deserve to be recognized for their dedication to uplifting and amplifying black voices are the founders of the EatOkra app. The New York couple Anthony and Janique Edwards, have created what many of us in the food industry have always been asking for — a guide to finding black food, by black people!

The EatOkra app is a directory of over 2,500 black-owned restaurants, food trucks, cafes, bakeries, bars, and wineries across the country. After a brief sign-up, the app uses the pinned location to quickly direct users to black-owned eateries nearby, in the cuisine of the users choosing. Anthony and Janique Edwards explained that they used the word “okra” in the naming of their app because it was a seed brought over during the slave trade. The impressive couple created the EatOkra app with the goal ofgiving something of substance back to the black community.”  The founders of EatOkra made the following statement on their official site:

“Yes, we considered the economic advantages of supporting black restaurants and black business owners, which is definitely a plus; however, more than anything, our mission is to provide a food-themed directory that encourages fellowship through one specific avenue, black food.

Since the release of the EatOkra app, they have connected with over 150,000 users, and the accolades are rolling in! Doesn’t get any better than that, right? Wrong. What makes this app even more ground-breaking, is that it’s absolutely FREE.

Anyone with an iPhone or Android device can download to support the EatOkra app and to pour back into the black-owned eateries in our community.
