It’s been four long years since The Weeknd graced Washington D.C. with one of his mesmerizing shows, but on Saturday night, he made a triumphant return to a sold-out crowd at Northwest Stadium. With an amazing selection of classic XO anthems as well as more recent hits Abel was able to turn the stadium into a moment fans will go on to talk about fondly for years.
The Weeknd emerged on stage adorned with an eye-catching black cloak and gold with a matching black dashiki underneath, his face hidden by a metallic mask with glowing blue LED eyes. He kept this mystique intact for the first few songs before finally revealing his face to an explosive eruption of cheers and applause from the enthusiastic D.C., Virginia, and Maryland crowd that filled the stadium. The love from his fans was intense as Abel’s face showed the joy and pure love he shared with his fans turned family as he was showered with loving praise.
The stage, a striking vision of a post apocalyptic city, was mesmerizing in itself extending out in three directions with the giant sensational Sorayama statue perched at the center. The four-way catwalk would be used by The Weeknd’s ensemble of dancers adorned head to toe in striking red gowns, and eerie golden masks, dancing with the melodies as if entranced amplifying his enigmatic allure.
Though the show was on a million from start to finish, one standout moment of the evening would be when Playboy Carti came back on stage to perform “Timeless” and “RATHER LIE” alongside The Weeknd igniting the stadium into a frenzy as pyrotechnics, and lasers that filled the arena in a sea of red, and blue. The Weeknd would then express his heartfelt gratitude to his brother for being a part of this unforgettable tour.
Audience engagement was at a peak, with Abel sharing the mic with an ecstatic fan during “Out of Time,” and later, he dashed around the barricade, high-fiving fans and amplifying the connection with his devoted supporters.
Performing hits like “Starboy”, “The Hills”, “Wicked Games” and many more The Weeknd’s performance was something both OG XO fans would love as well as a place for newer fans to appreciate the roots and hard work Abel has put into his 15+ years career. If anyone walked away from the show not satisfied or a “fein” for more they probably also think inception makes sense.
Let’s hope it won’t be another four years until the DMV area, is once again blessed with the incredible artistry of Mr. Tesfaye. The “After Hours Til Dawn” stadium tour was not just a performance it was a celebration of music, connection, and the undeniable magic that The Weeknd brings to the stage.
