Virginia-Virginia Tech football game canceled
The ACC said Monday night that the Virginia-Virginia Tech football game planned for Saturday has been canceled because three Virginia players were killed in a shooting earlier this month.
“The ACC and Virginia Tech continue to support UVA after the terrible tragedy,” the league said in a statement.
Both the Cavaliers (3-7, 1-6 ACC) and the Hokies (1-6, 1-7 ACC) are now done with their seasons (3-8, 1-6).
Last weekend, Virginia also didn’t play football against Coastal Carolina. Instead, they held a memorial at John Paul Jones Arena.
On November 13, Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry, and Mike Hollins were shot and killed, and running back Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. was hurt when he allegedly opened fire on a charter bus after coming back from a class trip. Marlee Morgan, a fifth student, was also shot, and she is getting better at home with her family. Sunday, Hollins was let out of the hospital.
Jones has been accused of three counts of second-degree murder and using a gun to commit a crime. Prosecutors have also charged him with two counts of intentionally hurting someone and other gun-related charges related to Hollins and Morgan being shot.
Jones is being kept in a Charlottesville, Virginia, jail without bail.
