Xavier Pulls Away Late to Defeat Georgetown 80–77 at Capital One Arena
Article by Terry Mayo
Georgetown battled throughout but couldn’t slow Xavier’s late push, falling 80–77 on Saturday night at Capital One Arena.
The loss drops the Hoyas to 8–4 overall and 1–1 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers improved to 9–4 and evened their conference record. Malik Mack led Georgetown with 21 points, reaching the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career in the process.
Julius Halaifonua followed with 19 points on efficient shooting, and KJ Lewis added 15. Jeremiah Williams anchored the rebounding effort with seven boards and dished out a team-high four assists. Georgetown shot just over 40 percent from the field but was outworked on the glass, allowing Xavier to control second-chance opportunities.
Xavier was fueled by Tre Carroll’s 22-point performance and a strong interior showing from Filip Borovicanin, who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. The Musketeers stayed composed in the closing minutes, knocking down key shots and free throws to seal the victory.
The Hoyas held a 40–35 advantage at halftime after leading by as many as 10 in the opening period. Xavier gradually erased the deficit in the second half, taking its first lead late before pulling away in the final minutes. Despite multiple chances to swing momentum back, Georgetown couldn’t convert when it mattered most as Xavier closed out the three-point win.
