As currently constructed, the College Football Playoff (CFP) allocates spots for the four best teams in College Football. Since the CFP Committee was created in 2015, the committee has selected the four best teams correctly. How can one say that without bias? Well, @BCSKnowHow creates a simulated Bowl Championship Series (BCS) ranking that uses the same formula as the official BCS rankings used from 1999 up until 2014.
So the issue is not the CFP committee – the fact that only four teams get a chance to play for a national championship is the main concern here. I could write a long, thought-provoking, 2500 word article about the flaws of the current system in place to crown a national champion – or I could use 5 words.
EXPAND THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF
It is not Rocket Science, Physics, or Calculus II. Just expand the playoff to 8 teams. But the formula I’m suggesting is a bit different from the rest. If we give automatic bids to Power 5 conferences, we’re basically nullifying the importance of the CFP Committee’s rankings. We still want the CFP Rankings to be relevant.
What I’m suggesting:
- Take the Top 7 teams according to the CFP Rankings.
- Take the best Group of 5 teams according to the CFP Rankings.
No matter how many blowouts we see during the NCAA Basketball Tournament, everyone loves a Cinderella story. You have to give the Group of 5 teams a chance to showcase their abilities versus superior talent.
Additionally, potential NFL players don’t care about bowl games anymore. If they’re not playing for a National Championship, they’ll opt-out and the quality of bowl games is diminished.
The expansion helps all parties involved and can give a boost to the dwindling fan interest of College Football.
WHAT ABOUT A GROUP OF 5 TOURNAMENT?
Only college football junkies would be interested in this. That being said, if you’re still reading this, you might be a college football junkie!
Welcome to the Go5 College Football Playoff sponsored by TheDMVDaily! I’m your host, Tyler Vaughn!
It’ll be a four-team tournament and the field will be decided using the College Football Playoff Rankings. The top four teams will play for the right to be the best Go5 team in the nation.
I’ll watch Championship football over a meaningless bowl game any day of the week. This level of football is where the best coaches are hidden. You don’t get the five-st recruits. Coaches have to adjust more often and be more creative with their schemes.
Glad you stayed the whole time and see you again soon!
