July 1 marks the start to increase minimum wage in Montgomery county. In set phases increases are to change from $11 to $15. Mentioned in the June 28 press release, the minimum wage will steadily increase by 2022.
Depending on the number of employees each business will have new minimum wages.
Current rates for July 1 indicate $14 for employers with 51 or more employees, $13.25 for employers with 50 or fewer employees, and $13 for employers with 10 or fewer employees.
The Montgomery County Council voted in November 2017 aiming for the wage change to take effect by 2024. Over the next four years there will be phases to establish shift to a full $15 an hour.
Many see this increase as a starting plan to create a living wage for individuals on an hourly rate.
It is important to note, employees 18 and under working under 20 hours per week are exempt from the rate. Employees in this age bracket must receive at least 85 percent of the state minimum wage.
Employers considered “home health services” or “home or community-based services” can apply for an adjusted implementation schedule through the office of Human Rights.
