Last week, the National Cannabis Festival took place in Washington, D.C. and we had the pleasure of kicking off the event with one of the Curaleaf and a free screening of the documentary “Grass is Greener“. I was joined by Visual Artists, Filmmaker & Hip-Hop Pioneer Fab 5 Freddy, Benard Noble & Raheem Uqdah. The film “Grass Is Greener” tells the story of Benard Noble, who was formerly incarcerated for possession of marijuana, which was about $5 worth.

As I got more acquainted with my interviewees, we specifically touched based on the impact of the War on Drugs, the disproportionate impact on Black and Brown communities, and opportunities for a more equitable future for the cannabis industry. During the discussion, Fab 5 Freddy, talked about how he heard about B Noble’s case, why he got involved, the idea of creating the documentary, and his focus on entrepreneurial activism. Benard Noble talked more about his experience being incarcerated, life after being released from prison, educating individuals about cannabis and the B NOBLE brand. Raheem Uqdah, representing Curaleaf spoke on the importance of uplifting and supporting those directly impacted by the War on Drugs, and the company’s initiatives in place to do so.

If you have heard about Benard Noble’s story here is a quick synopsis. Back in 2010, Noble was stopped by a police officer while riding his bicycle. He was frisked, arrested for possession of two joints, and was sentenced to 13 years of hard labor behind bars. He was released in 2017 after increasing pressure on social media. Bernard is now a founder and beneficiary of the B NOBLE brand, which recently released a pre-roll product in collaboration with Fab 5 Freddy and Curaleaf. The product contains two joints made of two grams of cannabis, symbolic of his experience. This partnership came about because Fab 5 Freddy met Bernard Noble when filming Grass is Greener; the documentary captures the time he was in prison through his release in addition to giving more context to the history of the War on Drugs.
