Anthony Anderson is a drummer with soul
What’s your full name? And give us a background about you

My full name is Anthony Anderson. I am Drummer and Percussionist from the Hunts Point section of The Bronx. Music is in my blood, due to my father who taught me how to play the drums.

He past away when I was nine. I have 19 siblings, being Number 16…lol! I live and dream drums. It’s how I connect with people. I am introverted but have a wild spirit, just like my fro!

Describe yourself with a music lyric

“My lyric is the Life I’m Living. ” – Anthony Anderson

Three things about you that nobody knows?
Watching wrestling is my all time favorite thing to do when I am not playing the drums.
I am a musician, a lover of rhythm and levels, but I can’t dance. (LOL)
Every time I close my eyes while I play, I think of my Dad.

Describe your musical origin?
My musical origin comes from many influences and genres. Rock music is at the core but I connect and interpret Hip Hop in my playing.
I was taught by my father, he was a Percussionist and Bass player. He taught me how to play with soul.
Describe your love for drumming
My love for drumming is my main interpretation on how I introduce myself to the world. It is inherent, it is home for me.
It is instrument I use to really connect, or vent, and express who I am. Drumming to me is not an obligation, it is apart of me, especially in the memory of my father.

Biggest musical influences?
My biggest musical influences come from so many genres and different artists. They can vary from Blink 182, The Dangerous Summer, Twenty One Pilots, to Eminem, Michael Jackson, and Anderson Paak.
Top 5 favorite albums of all time?
Red Hot Chili Peppers- By The Way
Blink-182 – Take Off Your Pants and Jacket
The Used- In Love and Death
Metallica- Ride The Lighting
Eminem- The Marshall Mathers LP.
There are so many albums that I love.
Top 5 favorite musicians (Drummers)
Travis Barker
Tony Royster Jr
Aaron Spears
Chad Smith
Anderson Paak

What are your pre and post studio/performances traditions?
Pre-performance I pray to my Dad. I walk away from the venue 20/30 mins before hitting the stage listening to music and air drumming. Post performances (LOL) I give myself a talking to, and reflect on my performances. As an artist, I always get off stage to connect with people who watched. Then I head to the bar!

Describe the process of you making a song
One of my goals is to work on a great project incorporating my drumming or drum fills…like working on a whole album!
Still my process always go to research but it includes working on the composition of the track and where to add the drums.
When I am covering a song, I look for music that relates to the time, its pace, or some dynamic range that I get to challenge myself on how to connect to it. I look for music that moves me.
Which artists or brands would you love to work with?
So Many! I would love to work with Travis Barker, Swizz Beatz, and the producer Tank God. Brands that would awesome to work with would definitely be VANS.
Street Dreams Magazine and the Fresh Empire. Being able to create dope projects with spirits and clothing lines. It would also be amazing to collaborate with Kid the Wiz and Shiggy, both incredible dancers.

What are some current challenges you face as a upcoming, independent artist and as a black man?
“As an independent artist, you are just that “independent”. Most, if not all, rests on your shoulder. As an artist, I have to focus on the performance presence, drumming, connection with the crowd as a one man band. Growth is also integral for me. I am still developing a style and a signature. ” – Anthony Anderson
As a drummer, it important to find your own beat. As a black man, I never forget where I came from. The mission is for me is to be able to give back what I have learned to younger black men, share my story, and inspire.
As a musician, I value diversity, I am into so many genres of music, that I go beyond color, I just want to move people…of all backgrounds.

What’s your opinion about the music industry?
That it is changing. The artists are creating newer lanes of independence in the industry and how they share their music.
My goals, is to really represent live musicianship. To be able to really incorporate drums in partnership with production. I want to work with producers and other instrumentalists to add a new dynamic to music.
If you could change one thing about it, what would you change and how?
To provide more platforms and opportunities to showcase more talent.
Record labels and music partnerships/affiliates to have more raw talent shows and scouting opportunities.
