Three days after winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup with the U.S. women’s national soccer team, Alex Morgan takes home the Best Female Athlete award at the ESPYs.

Alex Morgan had an incredible performance in the World Cup finishing with six goals and three assists with all three assists and five goals coming in the opening game against Thailand in a record setting 13-0 win for the U.S. team. Morgan was one of two players to have six goals and three assists in the World Cup tournament with her teammate Megan Rapinoe also achieving this feat. She was awarded the Silver Boot for her performance in the World Cup.

In her acceptance speech, Morgan began by saying, “Sorry, but this is probably the second-best trophy we won this week.” It’s safe to say this week has been very kind to Alex Morgan.

That was not the only win for Alex Morgan and the U.S. women’s national soccer team as they also won the ESPY award for Best Team. The women’s national team dominated winning their second World Cup and their fourth overall after defeating the Netherlands 2-0 in the World Cup final.

To put this into perspective, there have only been eight Women’s World Cup since the inaugural in 1991. The U.S. women have four wins, five top two finishes and have finished in the top 3 in every single World Cup.

The next step for the U.S. women is to qualify for the 2020 Olympic games and avenge their fifth place finish in 2016.
