Yesterday afternoon, the Bowie State Bulldogs took the field at Bulldog Stadium for a homecoming matchup against the Chowan Hawks. This game was very important to the Bulldogs as the Hawks handed them their only regular season loss last season.

The game started off as a back and forth affair as Chowan lead 10-9 early in the second quarter. From there, however, the Bulldogs would go on a 48-0 scoring run from the early second quarter to the end of the third quarter to make the score 57-10.

The Hawks and Bulldogs would trade touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score 64-17. The Bulldogs remain undefeated on the season improving to 6-0 and 3-0 in CIAA play. The Bulldogs are now not only the remaining undefeated CIAA football team but they are the only undefeated HBCU football team.

Bowie State quarterback junior Ja’rome Johnson played a huge role in the win for the Bulldogs throwing for 97 yards on 9/14 passing for three touchdowns and 198 yards rushing on 11 attempts for another three touchdowns including two 40+ yard rushing touchdowns.

The Bowie State defense also had a huge hand in the win combining for three sacks, 14 tackles for loss and three interceptions in the game. Potential Black College Player of the Year nominee sophomore defensive lineman Joshua Pryor finished the game with 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Sophomore defensive lineman Sharif Coombs finished with two tackles for loss and sacks in the while senior defensive back William Flowers III had a tackle for loss and an interception.

The Bowie State Bulldogs will have back to back tough matchups the next two weeks that could determine who clinches a berth in the CIAA Championship game. Next week they will on the road to face the Virginia State Trojans then the week after that they will be back at home to face the Virginia Union Panthers.
