D.C. Residents Alarmed By Reckless Moped; Police Have Cracked Down.
DC police have launched “Operation Ride Right” to crack down on illegal moped and scooter operations due to safety concerns arising from reckless driving behaviors. This initiative responds to increased complaints about these vehicles, particularly from food delivery drivers, who are accused of speeding, ignoring traffic laws, and endangering pedestrians.
The crackdown includes enforcing existing laws requiring drivers to have licenses, insurance, registration, and helmets. Recent efforts have led to the impounding of 17 mopeds and five arrests since June 5. Similar actions are being taken in cities like New York and Boston to address safety and regulatory issues associated with motor-driven cycles.
