Inspired by the golden age of Hip Hop and R&B, Don+ brings a new vibrant and authentic sound within in music. Don+ a singer and songwriter from South Carolina who currently resides in the Washington, D.C. At an early age, Don+ developed a passion for writing poetry and singing which led him to majoring in English. He credits his sound to the likes of Aaliyah, Donell Jones, and Nas. Whenever he is not in the studio or creating Don+ spends his time bringing the arts into schools through his creative learning center Note 2 Note Creative Learning Solutions, which also serves as his label.

Q: Who inspired you to make music?

Don+: It really took me being placed in a near death experience to really go hard for my music. I’ve always loved music and writing due to my studies. But It took me going through some health problems to really say “Hey you only have one life to live and you don’t know when that will be over. So, go for it while you can” that’s what really pushes me to create. I create so that there is a legacy, some concrete form that I existed.

Q: How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Don+: I am a Hip Hop and R&B fanatic!! What I love about it is that it is so diverse. I want to be known for exploring all those avenues and branches of those two genres. So many people want to go pop and claim that as their “lane”. It thinks that’s amazing for them. But as a black person there is something about are that is authentic to us: graffiti, break dancing, neo soul, hip hop, jazz, bee bop….I could go on and on. It’s OUR GENRE and I’m goanna explore every corner Hip Hop and R&B through my music.

Q: What is your creative process like?

Don+: Because I professionally write all forms, I force myself to just freestyle my music prior to putting it to paper. There is something about writing that seems final and too structured. For me writing a paper, book, even poetry has a level that is very cerebral. For me music is about the feeling. Free styling as a starting point gets rid of all the conventions of grammar and rules. From there I’ll go back and change a word here and there but for the most part all my songs just come straight from the top.

Q: Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Don+: Dream collaborations would be Missy Elliot, Rodney Jerkins, and Bryan Michael Cox. Like they are R&B royalty to me . I would just love to learn and soak up their energy. I would love to do a song with Brent Faiyaz and Summer Walker…that would be dope

Q: What is one message you would give to your fans?

Don+: The biggest thing that I would want to tell my fans is that if there is something you want to or you dream about: 1. Decide if you really want it 2. And really do it. Don’t half ass it. I would also say don’t let that insecurity, your sexual orientation, race, or anything stop you from putting in that work. There is a seat at the table for you…and if not build your own damn table!

Q: What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Don+: I would be running my business Note 2 Note full time helping schools embed the arts in their curriculum and helping young creatives develop their skills. And teaching.

Q: Where have you performed?

Don+: I have done performances in New Jersey and South Carolina. Due to Covid I have had virtual performances with The Indie Artist Spotlight hosted by Stevie from HIM Podcast and LUL Magazine.

Q: Which famous musician(s) do you admire?

Don+: Lucky Daye: His voice is so unique and I love that he has the support of some of the R&B greats like Babyface

Rihanna: She is the queen of reinvention,

Jazmine Sullivan: She is so slept on yet has more talent than many if not all the girls. Glad she is getting her flowers now.

Q: What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

Don+: Oh wow. Getting in trouble involves getting caught. And I’ve been pretty good at getting away or avoiding that. But I think the most trouble I’ve been in would have to be when my friends went into the middle school gym on a day when it was closed. We played basketball and then decided to spray the fire extinguisher at each other then pull the fire alarm. Long story short the authorities were called. Thank god our parents were just called.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Don+: Everything happens in time. Don’t rush a single, don’t rush an album. Don’t rush a video. Be open to learning and take the time out to create the best version possible. Its all about patience and the details.

Q: What’s next for you?

Don+: Right now, we are pushing the “Make A Move” video. The Remix is due out soon its featuring Mar, another DMV artist. The full EP should be out in March with hopefully another visual. And I have tons of features dropping in the first half of the year.
