Octavia ViZion Mills is an American poet, rapper, and songwriter born and raised in Portsmouth, VA. Growing up, she was heavily influenced by artists such as Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys. At the age of 16, she performed her first spoken word poem at church entitled, “Lord, You are Holy,” in which every person in the building stood on their feet throughout her performance in amazement. This would turn out to be the first of many stunning moments created by her and now she is releasing her new single “Sunshine” since signing with G Man Management.

The DMV Daily – What first got you into music?

ViZion –  I started off writing poems and reciting spoken word poems but switched over to music during a dry spell, in which, I couldn’t think of any poems to write.

The DMV Daily – Who inspired you to make music?

ViZion –  My greatest musical inspirations were Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys growing up, but now I can be musically inspired by anyone or anything.

The DMV Daily – How would you describe the music that you typically create?

ViZion –   I try to create music that people hear and emotionally experience. My style is very soulful, personable, and thought-provoking.

The DMV Daily – What is your creative process like?

ViZion –  My process of creativity looks different depending on the situation. Most of the time it is sparked by adversity. I usually pace back and forth trying to find an approach to a new song.

The DMV Daily – Who would you most like to collaborate with?

ViZion –  I would like to collaborate with Childish Gambino, Jorja Smith, Kendrick Lamar, and Erykah Badu.

The DMV Daily – If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

ViZion –  I would open for Chance the Rapper.

The DMV Daily – What is one message you would give to your fans?

ViZion –  Keep an open heart and follow your heart wherever it takes you even if it seems you are making little to no progress. Set every goal knowing that you are already complete without achieving that goal. True success flows from within.

The DMV Daily – What is the most useless talent you have?

ViZion –  I use everything I have.

The DMV Daily – Do you sing in the shower? If so, what songs?

ViZion –  I’m a Rockstar in the shower. I love to sing Tracy Chapman “Talkin Bout a Revolution” and “Fast Car” along with “What’s Up” by 4NonBlondes.

The DMV Daily – What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

ViZion –  Music does not hinder all the other desires I have.

The DMV Daily – How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

ViZion –  If mastered and used correctly the internet greatly increases sales and exposure for artists and other types of businesses.

The DMV Daily – Which famous musicians do you admire?

ViZion –  I admire Bob Marley and Tracy Chapman.

The DMV Daily – What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

ViZion –  I wasn’t constantly in trouble while in Basic Training for the United States Army because I didn’t know how to blend in.

The DMV Daily – What is the best advice you’ve been given?

ViZion –  Always be a student in the classroom of life.

The DMV Daily – If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

ViZion –  More education on contractual agreements and financial literacy.

The DMV Daily – What’s next for you?

ViZion –  After this single, I do plan to release a project. Other than that, the plan is to continue planning and following my heart.
