On The Regular is a bi-weekly podcast featuring 2 women from NY, myself and Reaux, highlighting hot hip-hop topics and the latest in battle rap and hip-hop music. My co-host, Reaux, and I have been down since middle school days and every time we link up we talk about all different kinds of things in rap regularly. We have SO much in common from our love for hip-hop/rap, sneakers and tomboy style, being disgruntled Knicks fans, shit, even our last names; our conversations are so natural, so regular. That’s pretty much the makeup of the show. We’re real friends who are real rap fans and have real conversations like this REAL OFTEN.
Manito: Iight, so BOOM: The three of us started it, myself, Reaux, and Nigma. Nigma is our producer for OTR and the silent third partner in this project. Nigma and another one of our friends noticed me and Reaux’s natural chemistry and our dialogue and suggested we start one. Apparently, we’re hilarious and opinionated and shit. We were hesitant at first but one day we were hanging out and the next minute we were brainstorming names for the show. Then, our first episode aired October 18th! We made sure it was after 1017 Day because Gucci Mane got married on TV and the Cavs played the Celtics for the NBA season opener, we had to prioritize. Haha!
Manito: I think the fact that 2 women co-hosting a podcast about hip-hop music is unique. I personally don’t see a straight up female hip-hop presence in media or podcasts. I’m so tired of hearing hip-hop is something specifically of male interest. There are women who love it too, and know WAY MORE than most guys and have well respected opinions. Another thing is we have dope ass topics, we stay away from putting the main focus on current events because social media already drains that shit out enough, to me, anyway. Lastly, I don’t know a lot of podcasts with a battle rap segment.
I would say Authentic, Unapologetic, LOUD, Relatable, and Entertaining describe our show.
• Showoff, that’s my new battle rap crush, as mentioned on the podcast. He’s a cutie.
• Lebron James, because he’s like an ambassador for new hip-hop in a way, I would want to see where his general hip-hop opinion is. I’m reaching, but a girl can dream.
• Elliott Wilson, I’m a huge fan of his contributions to hip-hop media and he gives the best interviews. It’d be cool to interview him for a change.
• Vashtie. I love her street style, she’s my idol as an overall influencer. I’m curious to know her stories about being in the industry and if Drake was making her hotline bling or not, because she’s gorgeous and Drake is…Drake! Lol.
• TsuSurf. That’s my favorite battle rapper and I’m interested in learning more about battle rap in general. Reaux is WAY more of a battle rap aficionado between the both of us.
Manito: One of my goals is sponsorship and getting paid! I’m broke baby *Money Makin Mitch voice* plus I hate my job. I’d love an opportunity to make a living this way, talking shit and expressing my love for music are 2 of my favorite things. I have a dream of the podcast making it to Tidal, or any kind of bigger platform one day, wishful thinking.
Manito: For me, it’s DEFINITELY eating!!! I’m not productive on an empty stomach, I always eat before we record an episode. Before I post on my website, I listen to whatever music inspired the blog post I’m working on. I usually blog on my days off so pre-post, I HAVE to have hot green tea with honey and watch The Wendy Williams Show in the morning.
Manito: Our topics for On The Regular are things in rap we always wanted to discuss in detail thoroughly. In the first season, we brainstormed a bunch of things we wanted to talk about and every other week we met to decide which one we’re going to have a conversation on next. I was ITCHING for the “Lost Kings of NY” episode where we talked about 4 New York rappers who had potential to be great but missed the mark. Fabolous and Jadakiss just put out their collab project around that time, so it was a perfect opportunity to have that episode.
