Who is Shai? What don’t we know about you?
I go by Shai, but everyone literally calls me Shai Butta. I have a Bachelor’s in Journalism and my Master in Business and Professional Public Relations. I’ve been writing since 2009, but I started talking it seriously in 2012, and i don’t think people started taking me seriously until 2016. My 9-5 is in Marketing, so I definitely use my degrees.
My down to earth-ness is unique. Everyone cannot be comfortable around strangers. Idk if this is unique or nerdy, but I am a huge fan of communication theories, and I apply them to relationships, my work environment, and my love life. I am related to Elizabeth Catlett, who has a a graphic artist and sculptor who made her art based on black people’s experience. I can draw, but it’s more of a hobby, and she was the reason why I minored in art history in undergrad. Im also an open book. Some people have a bad connotation about that phrase, but I love who I am. I’ve accepted who I am, a strong women, and no one can ever come at me in a negative light trying to diminish the self love that I have but not everyone has that.
Which lyric describes Shai? Who are some of her favorite music artists?
Rap Lyric Description: “You already seen me turn into a man into a goat.” Jay Z says that in Crown and though I am not in the top tier of my career, every time I hear that it inspires me because I am setting myself up to become a spearheaded force in my career.
Freudian by Daniel Caeser / Dedication by Nipsey Hussle / KOD J Cole if J Cole did not drop my third choice would have been Moneybagg Yo’s Heartless.
Find out about her media origin, influences, the butta blog, and her other ventures here
My media origin is broad, but it is more writing. Though we are an instant gratification generation, I feel like some people still appreciate actually reading.
Everything I talk about comes from things around me, so my influences are definitely my environment. Conversations with friends and family. Debates i see on Twitter spark up great conversations and also music, which takes a part in sparking up conversation as well.
I am turning my brand into a stationery line. Agenda books, posters, little key chains, tee shirts, pins, and desk accessories. I’ve been working on it for about a year. All the entrepreneur and mental health messages I post through my blog and it’s Instagram will be transferred to my stationery line. This will allow my supporters to carry that positive message with them, or see it every day because we all need that.
I write for Epoch Times in NY, Healing Melanins Magazine which releases next month, and I am Hip Hip Mag.
I work with Taste Creators in Philly. We are a media group who dedicates services to indie artists.
Check out this heart warming and beautiful piece to her grandmother along with Her name spell out
My grandma passed last year, so this is for her. I was locked up last summer, and she passed the day I was let out so I did not get a chance to say good-bye. She’d be so proud of my consistency and hard work. Me and her had a close relationship, and she just knew I’d be great. I never believed that, but I try every single day to live up to her high expectations of me. I love you so much, grandma and I am sorry I wasn’t there. I also would like to dedicate this to my beautiful mother, who rarely believed in me and did not help me when I was incarcerated. Im still out here doing great things without her support and I lover her too.
