The Last Dance, a documentary detailing Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ road to their sixth and final NBA championship, won the Emmy award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

The Last Dance, a documentary detailing Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ road to their sixth and final NBA championship, won the Emmy award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. This was one of three Emmy nominations The Last Dance received with the other two being Outstanding Directing for a Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Editing for a Nonfiction Program. The Emmy for Outstanding Directing went to American Factory while the Emmy for Outstanding Editing went to Apollo 11.

The Last Dance is a 10-episode docuseries that premiered on ESPN April 19th airing two episodes per week until May 17th and was released on Netflix on July 19th.

There were several intimate moments and unseen footage showcased throughout the documentary such as Bulls practices, interactions in the locker room, on the team bus and their private, Dennis Rodman’s life off the court, and the unseen footage of Michael Jordan crying after winning the 1996 NBA Finals his first championship following his father’s passing.

The documentary was loaded with cameos from NBA legends and some of Michael Jordan’s greatest competitors/rivals including Isiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Gary Payton, and the late great Kobe Bryant. Also featured in the documentary was President and former Chicago resident Barack Obama as well as former President Bill Clinton.

Among other things, The Last Dance received great praise for its soundtrack featuring some of hip hop’s greatest hits including I Ain’t No Joke by Eric B and Rakim, Been Around the World by Puff Daddy ft Notorious B.I.G. and Mase, and Ruff Ryders Anthem by DMX among others.

Among the four documentaries The Last Dance beat out for the Emmy win was Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness.
