On the edge of greatness
Baltimore emcee Ernest Third give a Friday Night Light J. Cole mix with a little bit of Damn Kendrick Lamar type of vibe to me on his latest project Edge Of A Half Moon. This project is composed of 12 total tracks composed with three tracks and no features. Nothing but beautiful and classic hip hop coming from Ernest Third. The first time in awhile a upcoming artist have literally made me write down quote and lyrics to use for my Instagram captions. To best describe this album, Ernest Third paints the beats with lyrics with has subtle strokes of his life growing up in the hoods of Baltimore. From identity issues, acceptance from people, rumors spread to tear his name down, struggles with addiction, the false image social media gives, political issues, being born in the wrong generation, and a lot of inspiration content which is masterfully put together.
Normally, I would listen to a project at least ten times before I drop my final verdict. In this case I had to listen to it 25 times and let it resonate with me. A lot of the content Ernest Third spoke about was personally relates to me and I feel it’s relates to a lot of people going through similar issues. The moon I feel represent the world Ernest feels like he resides in compared to modern society and he mentions a lot of identity issues due to being born in the wrong generation. He is was on the edge of losing himself while finding himself trying to fit in with the world. When he accepted who he was he resonated with the moon so the title of the project along with the art work is absolutely brilliant. Overall, I would put this project with KOD, Victory Lap, Legends of the Summer, ?, and Care Fore Me as my personal favorite this year. I hope Ernest Third starts to get the recognition he deserves and more people listen to his artistry.
Final Verdict: 10 Masterful
Pros: Lyricism on another level, smooth instrumentals, classic hip hop appeal, meaningful backstory, compelling artwork
Cons: No bangers but this project wasn’t meant for it
Favorite Tracks: Gravity, Who Am I?, Craters, Edge of the Past
