Women are taking over the film industry and making a mark in a male-dominated Hollywood with various projects, collaborations, directing debuts, and creations. The rise of female voices in 2020 has been cascading in more than just film. It has been expanding through the increase in female rap, actresses being nominated for more awards, women making popular series, movies, clothing brands, taking over the areas that have been male-dominated for centuries.
- Megan The Stallion is not letting anything dim her rising light. In the newest issue of Variety, the Stallion discussed a new endeavor of creating a film. Megan revealed she is in the works of creating a screenplay for a horror film. “The movie I’m working on is gonna be something that definitely blows your mind; you’ve never seen it before.” Megan also said that her dream collaboration on a film would be with Get Out director, Jordan Peele. Being that Megan has worked with top artists like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and became an ambassador for Rihanna’s lingerie line “Savage Fenty,” anything is possible for this rising star in her career. Megan’s love for horror sci-fi is nothing new to fans. The anime lover had created a YouTube series in 2019 called “Hottie-ween” that was directed by Teyana Taylor with guest stars Dave East and Jay Cole. Hottieween was about Megan The Stallion playing a Private investigator trying to take down a gang known as “FuccBois.” In this three-Part series, Megan the P.I is on cracking down the case on why so many women are being enticed with this group and taken under their spell. This series was also in collab with YouTube music and marked Megan’s acting debut in a horror-comedy theme movie. Megan is using this time in quarantine to make new music like her collab dropping this Friday with Cardi B. and now adding “writer” to her resume focusing on finishing a script for her idea. After this past incident with Tory Lanez, she is taking the time to focus on herself and her craft. “I’m not the type of person who can stay down for a long time,” she says. “I don’t like to be sad or keep myself in the dark place because I know it could be the worst thing happening, but the pain and the bad things don’t last for long.” Sending prayers to the H-town hottie and wishing for a full recovery.
- It is safe to say that Issa Rae has been leading the media industry with her versatile movies and TV shows since she came on the scene from her YouTube series Awkward Black Girl. Issa Rae is known for her more comedic scriptwriting. It has been released that Issa Rae and Jordan Peele are teaming up for a new sci-fi horror film called a sinkhole. This film is going to tackle the topic of female perfection. This film will be based on Leyna Krow’s Short story “sinkhole” ( LINK TO SHORT STORY: https://short-stories.co/stories/sinkhole-GrDnE17Knlb) The story is about a young couple looking to find a perfect house, but the only problem is there is a sinkhole in the backyard. The couple builds a fence around the hole for protection. One day they noticed a flashlight falls deep in the hole only to reappear on their coffee table fixed. There is a bigger plot with a deeper meaning in these intricate details and have a message about female identity. This announcement of a new project came after Issa Rae received 8 Emmy nominations for her comedy series “Insecure.” No word on when the project will be complete.]
- American Screenwriter and director Nia DaCosta are about to make history in the Marvel franchise. According to Deadline Hollywood, Nia DaCosta will direct the sequel of Captain Marvel 2. This will make Nia DaCosta the first black woman to lead a Marvel movie and the fourth woman to direct a marvel project within the series. Nia DaCosta is a writer and director based in New York City. She is best known for her critically acclaimed movie “Little Woods.” The plot focused on two sisters who find themselves caught in the illegal world of drug trading across the border their mother dies. She is also a director alongside Jordan Peele of a modern version of the 1992 original “Candyman” that is set to release sometime this year. Reports indicated that DaCosta has been the lead choice to direct the sequel for some time but has now landed the role. No official announcement has been made from DaCosta.
The female empowerment of 2020 has given voices to many black women and is giving changes for women people of color to be on the frontline of productions finally letting black women show that we are more than what the eyes can see. The creativity will not be boxed in and the recognition is deserved. IN the words of Issa Rae herself: “ I’m Rooting for everyone black”
