One year ago today, the Baltimore Ravens started off the 2019 NFL season setting a single-game franchise record for points in a game beating the Miami Dolphins 59-10. This was just the second time the Ravens have ever scored 50 points in a game with the first coming in 2012 in a 55-20 win over the Oakland Raiders.
This was also the first time a team had scored at least 50 points in their season opener since 1995 since, ironically, the Miami Dolphins beat the New York Jets 52-14.
Lamar Jackson, Ravens’ then second-year quarterback and eventual league MVP finished the game going 17/20 passing for 324 yards scoring five touchdowns. This made him only the third quarterback in Ravens franchise history to score five passing touchdowns in a game (Joe Flacco, 2014; Tony Banks, 2000). He would go on to have two more games with five passing touchdowns in the season.
Former Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who played the entire fourth quarter in relief of Lamar Jackson, put up 55 passing yards on 6/6 passing and a touchdown.
Ravens then-rookie receiver Marquise Brown finished with 147 receiving yards on four catches scoring two touchdowns while then second-year tight end Mark Andrews finished with 108 receiving yards on eight catches scoring one touchdown.
Ravens running back Mark Ingram finished the game with 107 rushing yards on 14 carries scoring two touchdowns.
The Ravens defense held the Dolphins to 200 yards total offense forcing three Dolphins turnovers and holding them scoreless the entire second half.
This was just the beginning for a Ravens team that would go on to finish with a 14-2 regular-season record-setting a franchise record for wins in a season. They also lead the league in scoring with 531 total points setting a franchise record for points scored in a season and set an NFL record for rushing yards in a season.
In addition, the Ravens led the league in passing touchdowns, second in total offense and rushing touchdowns, third in yards per play, and tied for the third-fewest turnovers committed.
The Ravens defense held their own finishing the season third in fewest points allowed, fourth in fewest total yards allowed, the second in fewest passing touchdowns, sixth in fewest passing yards allowed and fifth in rushing yards.
We’ll see if the Baltimore Ravens carry over the success from the 2019 season into the 2020 season starting in their week one matchup against the Cleveland Browns.
