Many citizens have been looking forward to Inauguration day as a new era in America. The transition has happened, and President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are officially sworn into office. All eyes are on them to see what the first executive orders will be in their first 100 days of office. Another thing all eyes were on Inauguration day was the fashion trends from the attendees.

Monochromatic theme and peacoats

The theme was monochrome for many of the women seen at Inauguration. The rich plums, beiges, and red colors were in full effect for the ceremony. The palette of purple was presented by Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton. It has been said that the color scheme was a homage to the women’s suffrage movement and Kamala’s choice of purple hue was a tribute to Shirley Chisholm who wore the same color during her presidential campaign reign. Biden’s Granddaughter, Naomi Biden, Jennifer Lopez, and Lady Gaga kept it simple with classic all-white outfits with accents of gold. Former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton was wearing her signature pants suit in a purple fashion designed by Ralph Lauren. She also matched her outfit with a ruffled scarf, dark-colored overcoat, and black leather gloves.

Madam Vice President Kamala Harris was wearing a rich amethyst-colored shift dress with a matching overcoat designed by Christopher John Rogers. Christopher John Rogers is a young, black fashion designer who was named 2020 CFDA American Emerging Designer of the year. She accessorized her monochrome fit with a custom pearl necklace by Wilfredo Rosado and a David Yurman Flag Pin. The pearls were also a representation of the Divine 9 organization Kamala Harris is a part of; Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority incorporated.

First lady Jill Biden had a custom look designed by Markarian, an American label from designer Alexandra O’Neill. Dr. Biden wore a distinctive teal color blue dress and matching coat with blue tweed stitching, embellished Swarovski crystals and pearls accented with velvet cuffs; and a matching face mask to complete the look. Alexandra O’Neill expressed his excitement creating this ensemble saying “It is an incredible honor to dress Dr. Biden….I am so humbled to be even a small part of American history.”

Biden’s granddaughters were seen wearing fall/pastel-colored coats with matching face mask.

Natalie Biden was seen wearing a custom bubblegum pink cashmere coat and matching scarf, pink gloves, and facemask by Lafayette 148 in New York. The shoes were a more neutral tone as she wore beige knee-high boots.

Finnegan Biden wore a khaki brown shaded outfit with an ankle-length coat, matching dress, and boots with a brown face mask.

Amanda Gordon broke history being the youngest poet invited to the

Inauguration. She also was a showstopper wearing a long Prada designed banana colored pea coat in military tailored style covering her full body but giving vibrancy to her outfit with a pop of red from a headband.

Keeping in the theme of long coats, Doug Emhoff daughter Emma Emhoff wore a Tartan plaid fawn-color coat made by Miu-Miu, a subsidiary of Prada. It was full length with a high neckline and crystal-embellished shoulders in the color bronze.

Kamala Harris’s great-nieces were also keeping theme wearing leopard print fur coats that were designed by a childrenswear company based in New York City; I love Plum. The coats were a special tribute to Kamala Harris as Meena Harris posted an adorable photo of her two daughters captioning ” Special coats to look just like Auntie’s” referencing a throwback photo of young Kamala wearing the same fur at their age.

Presidential Street Styles

Streetwear mixed with professional attire is becoming a new trend with men wearing sneakers instead of dress shoes with suits. Some favor the trend, and it was seen at the inauguration from a few. The  Jordan Dior 1s were spotted on a mystery man’s feet as they were seen in a two-second clip. As social media began to question who it was; Meena Harris, (Kamala Harris niece) confirmed it was her husband Nikolas Ajagu. She even joked on Instagram captioning a post with “ Of all the things I expected to happen at the inauguration, Nik being appointed “Secretary of Drip” was not one of them” and keeping the humor on Twitter with “ I step away from Twitter for less than an hour for the inauguration ceremony and Nik’s shoes are #1 trending????? The limited-edition shoe is a collab with Dior the brand that retails for $2,000 and a rare collector’s item being only 4,7oo made.

Maisy Biden stepped out in Jordan’s mid 1 sisterhood. The shoe retails for $160 and is currently rising on StockX since being sighted at the inauguration. The Sisterhood 1s is a stylized take on a classic shoe in the colorway of black, white, and Game Royal. The mid shoe has faux stitching at the quarter panels and heel giving a stylized look to a classic basketball shoe.

Forever First Lady stole the show.

Former First Lady Michele Obama was the highlight of the inauguration fashions the moment she stepped out of the presidential car. Everyone was in awe of her cranberry maroon monochromatic colorway for her outfit of choice. She was sporting curls and colors wearing the burgundy/plum head to toe outfit designed by black fashion designer Sergio Hudson and styled by Meredith Koop. This is not the first time Sergio has worked with our forever first lady. He also styled her for Essence fest in 2019 with a short-sleeve sequined navy jumpsuit paired with Sergio’s signature belt. Sergio Hudson has also worked with other high-end celebrity clients like Rihanna and Beyonce. Michelle Obama tailored the outfit to her extenuate her body and height wearing wide-leg pants that were

singed at the waist. A matching plum-colored belt with a gold buckle,  turtleneck, and a long cranberry color coat. The inauguration look was finished off with leather gloves Stuart Weitzman boots, a black silk face mask, and voluminous curls to match. The entire outfit gave Mrs. Obama aerating energy through her clothing. Aside from the glamour, the trending topic was also her hair. The word “Laidt” was trending because everyone was using this to describe their love for Michelle Obama’s curls. After a few hours, the mystery hairstylist was revealed as Yene Damtew who appreciated all the praise and even showed her techniques to achieve such curls. She has been working with Mrs. Obama since 2009 and has been the master behind a lot of her hairstyles.
