Washington Football Team Re-Signs QB Taylor Heinicke to Two-Year Deal
Have the Washington Football Team Found Themselves a Franchise Quarterback???!!!
27-year-old Taylor Heinicke was just enrolled at Old Dominion University taking online classes two months ago. Fast forward to the end of the 2021 NFL season, he has now secured a two-year deal worth $8.75M with the Washington Football Team.
It was only back on December 8th that Heinicke earned a spot on the practice squad with Washington after being out of the NFL for over 15 months. He then signed to the active team roster on December 19.
Eight days later he went on to make his Washington debut against the Carolina Panthers in Week 16. He completed 12/19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown. He also had 3 carries for 22 yards. Washington was down 20-6 when he went under center and ended up losing 20-13 but still gained momentum with him running the offense.
His biggest moment though came against the eventual 2021 Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Heinicke threw for 306 yards and a touchdown while adding a touchdown and 46 yards with his legs. Washington ended up losing 31-23, but in the end, Heinicke gave the champions a run for their money and even earned their respect in the process.

Heinicke spoke to Senior Vice President of Media & Content Julie Donaldson stating,
“It’s a good feeling. Everyone knows I was at home taking math classes…so for this contact to come, it’s a big sigh of relief. I’m really excited. This is the place I wanted to be, so everything came together pretty smoothly, and I’m really excited to be back.”
“There’s a few times when you look back at your NFL career and you wonder, ‘Could I have worked harder, could I have prepared better? And when I came to Washington, that wasn’t going to be a thought I was going to have after this season. Every second that I was there, even when I got home, was dedicated to if I got this shot, I want to get back in. It’s a dream of mine. You learn some things throughout the years, and you take it and leave it, and I feel like I’m a better person because of that.” – Taylor Heinicke
