10 Celebrities That Have Been Cancelled That You Should Know About

Cancel Culture is on the prowl and no celebrity, influencer, or reality TV star is off limits. As people across the nation continue to protest in the fight for justice against the unlawful murders of black men and women, many look to their favorite celebrities and influencers to speak out and stand against police brutality and racial injustice.

The pressure is on and Cancel Culture isn’t giving out any cut cards, and that includes celebrities. With pressure though, comes inauthentic and rushed responses and many celebrities are learning the hard way that their words and their actions can in fact, be used against them when the world is at war against racism and police brutality.

Here’s a list of 10 celebrities and influencers that have been cancelled by the culture via social media as a result of their comments regarding the black community, race relations and the current state of the world.

1. Desi Banks– Desi Banks, social media influencer and comedian, faced backlash after posting a meme that showed Martin Luther King marching with other peaceful protestors with the caption, “This is a Protest”, up against a picture of picture of looters at Target in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with the caption “This is a crime.” Many were angered by the tweet and considered Banks was “shaming” protestors in his comment. He later apologized, but many still consider him cancelled.
2. B. Simone– B. Simone’s fans began to notice and express their disappointment at her silence on racial injustice and the current state of the world. When the social media influencer and comedian finally spoke out, it seemed to make matters worse on her end. She tweeted, “I’m not living to please man. I’m here to please God at the end of the day…I am a Christian! I’m God fearing, I have to answer to him! I’m going to ask myself WWJD not what an angry black woman do. I am angry but I am also trying to be Godly.” After fans and critics deemed her cancelled, she tweeted in response, “I’ll never be ‘cancelled’. I’m doing my part! Period. I don’t need Twitter’s validation.”
3. Tokyo Jets– Fans and critics of rapper Tokyo Jetz quickly took to social media to express her cancellation after a video emerged of her making a joke about the death of George Floyd, who was unlawfully murdered by law enforcement officers. In the video, Tokyo Jetz appears to have Atlanta hairstylist, the Hair Physician, in a headlock and can be heard in the video saying, “I’ma George Floyd your motherfucking ass.” She later posted a video where she is in tears and issues an apology “to family, to people on the front lines, to people who actually stand up for us.”
4.   Virgil Abloh– Creator of Off-White, Virgil Abloh, ticked off the black community after posting in a story on his Instagram that he contributed $50 “for kids in the streets” that needed bail funds during the continuous protests across the country. To clarify his donation, Virgil Abloh posted a note on his Instagram explaining that he actually donated $20,500 in total to “bail funds and other causes related to this movement” adding that he also joined a social media chain of friends who were matching $50 dollar donations. He later apologized for his contribution “appearing to some as if that was my only contribution to these important causes.” However, not only have fans and critics cancelled, him but twitter users now refer to the number 50 as ‘Virgil.’
5. Shameik Moore– Actor Shameik Moore was blasted for comments that he made during a Twitter rant about the George Floyd protests happening across the country. He started with, “See I have a very strong opinion that the black community hates to hear..but needs to hear.. we need to learn how to deal with police…and or racism…because this is the part of the scenario we have failed to fix.” During his rant, he continued, “We have to work on our community before blaming everything on “racist” and police. 1…there is still black on black violence that needs to be addressed…and 2..if we know that the wrong white person could change our whole life with a false accusation.” He took it a step further when he went on IG Live, where he suggested that Rosa Parks could’ve ridden in a black-owned taxi instead of taking the bus in 1955. In the end, he apologized for his rant, but it didn’t go over well.
6. Lori Harvey– Social media personality and model, Lori Harvey, was accused of caring only about a friend’s store that was looted in Atlanta, rather than the bigger issue of police brutality. In her first statement regarding the current state of the world, Lori Harvey took to Instagram to criticize looters who robbed her friend’s store. “Atlanta, y’all took it too far last night. My heart is so broken for my friends. I know how hard you guys worked to build SacDelux from the ground up (2 Black women) and I can’t even imagine the pain of watching it get destroyed like that for absolutely no reason.” She continued on, “I’m so sorry this happened to you guys. The looting of SacDelux was absolutely senseless and disgusting.” It wasn’t until after she called out protestors that she actually addressed the murder of George Floyd and other black men and women at the hands of law enforcement and fans just weren’t having it.
7. Shekinah Jo Anderson– Love and Hip-Hop reality star, Shekinah Jo Anderson, was under fire after she was seen on IG live crying because the Gucci store in Atlanta’s Lenox Mall was looted during a protest. In the IG Live video, Shekinah slams protestors at Lenox Mall. “Gucci ain’t did shit to y’all,” she said while crying. “Y’all can say whatever y’all wanna say…they racist…whatever, I don’t wanna hear that shit. They ain’t did shit to y’all. Lenox Mall ain’t did nothing to you.” Similar to Lori Harvey, many deemed Shekinah’s comments insensitive and accused her of missing the bigger picture by focusing on material things that can be replaced, rather than the black men and women whose lives can’t be replaced.
8. Ari Fletcher– Social media influencer, Ari Fletcher, faced backlash after she posted a tweet suggesting that people should use their stimulus check to donate to police brutality and racial injustice efforts. She wrote, “Everybody begging people with money to donate, I hope y’all using some of y’all stimulus check to donate as well.” Fans were not happy with the tweet and believe it was insensitive considering those who may be unemployed as a result of the pandemic and have no other means of income to support themselves or their families.
9. Trina– Miami rapper Trina was criticized for her comments comparing protestors to animals in a heated debate with her co-host, Trick Daddy, on their TNT Radio Show. “Keep everybody off the street, these animals off the street, that’re running around in Miami-Dade County acting like they escaped from the zoo,” she said, later adding that half of the marchers “are not even caring” about Floyd. When co-host Trick Daddy tried to explain the importance of the protests, Trina responded, “I’m never scared. I have my license and registration and insurance. I know my rights.” On the radio show today, Trina attempted to clarify and apologize for her comments. “I would never say that, or call black people animals or names. I am a black person, I must be an animal, I must be this same person,” she said, “that’s not who I am.” Many weren’t feeling Trina after her initial comments and even signed a recent petition to have her fired.
10. Drew Brees– New Orleans Saints player, Drew Brees’ comments about the American flag and national anthem backfired when fans, critics and even teammates took to social media to express their disappointment, hurt and anger. In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Brees said that he will “never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America.” He went on to say, “I envision my two grandfathers who fought for this country during World War II, one in the Army and one in the Marine Corps. Both risking their lives to protect our country and to try make our country and this world a better place. So every time I stand with my hand over my heart looking at that flag and singing the national anthem, that’s what I think about.” Brees issued an apology today for his comments and admitted to “completely missing the mark” on current issues in the US, but fans aren’t buying it.
