Coming into this fight, Anthony Joshua has not taken a loss of any kind in his career. He’s boasted 21 knockouts in that span and has risen up the British heavyweight ranks.

There’s been major trash talk and maybe some professional chatter about Joshua facing Deontay Wilder. Within the last few years, these two men have been top of the heavyweight division, leading the way to a potential super fight.

Meanwhile, Andy Luiz Jr had something to say about that. In unexpected fashion, he defeated Anthony Joshua with a 7th round TKO with win the IBO, WBA, IBF, and WBO World Heavyweight titles.

Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller was supposed to face Joshua but he was stopped by the New York State Athletic Commission due to performing enhancing drug violations. Stepping into his place was Luiz, who was coming off a KO performance in late April. Many doubted Luiz who was an 11-1 underdog in most betting books. Joshua’s fans and many others saw this as a warmup fight for Wilder. In terms of rest, Joshua has not fought since last September.

Luiz had weeks to prepare and Joshua had months. Most people came to see Joshua and DAZN, a new boxing streaming service, used this moment to promote Joshua to American fans. In the 7th Round, Ruiz sent all of that crumbling in this fashion:

As you see above, Ruiz’s body shots and constant hits slowed down Joshua. And with that, Joshua is sent home without his titles and on the wrong side of the biggest upset in recent boxing history.

Ruiz Jr is the first boxer of Mexican-American decent to win the World Heavyweight title. The Underdog is now the Top Dog.
