Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach JR Did Not Disappoint And The DMV Won The Night.

On March 1st, Premier Boxing and Prime Video delivered a phenomenal event for “Tank vs. Roach” at the Barclays Center in New York. With a sold-out crowd, Gervonta Davis nearly surpassed the Rolling Stones for the highest-grossing ticketed event in Barclays Center history. With an astonishing 19,000+ in attendance, the event kicked off at 6 PM with the preliminaries, presented by Prime Video, featuring three of the DMV’s best boxers.

Deric “Scooter” Davis

In his sixth professional fight, the rising boxing star from DC Deric “Scooter” Davis, wasted no time unleashing a flurry of punches against a full-guarded Jamal Johnson. Davis secured a first-round knockout, further elevating his position in the boxing ranks.

David “The BodySnatcher” Whitmire

In his ninth professional fight, David Whitmire faced a fiery Angel Munoz in a six-round welterweight bout. By the third round, Whitmire began landing a series of body shot combinations. Heading into the final round, both fighters traded powerful blows, but in the end, the DC native secured a unanimous decision victory.

Jarrett “Swift” Hurd

Maryland’s boxing star Jarrett “Swift” Hurd announced his retirement from the sport after a split-decision loss to Johan Gonzalez. The former unified world champion at 154 pounds ends his career as one of the best in his division.

“I’m a man of my word,” Hurd said. “This will be the last time y’all see me. … I thank each and every one of y’all for your support.”

Two judges scored it for Gonzalez (98-92 and 96-94), while the third had it 96-94 for Hurd.

Gary Antuanne Russell

After suffering a loss to Alberto Puello, DMV’s star boxer Gary A. Russell had another chance to reclaim his status with a dominant win over Rayo Valenzuela. He put on a masterclass performance, winning the majority—if not all—of the rounds. Russell is now the new WBA Super Lightweight Champion (140 lbs).

Official scores: 119-109, 119-109, and 120-108 in favor of Russell.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs. Lamont “The Reaper” Roach Jr.

Gervonta and Lamont did not disappoint in their highly anticipated showdown. Trading punches and absorbing heavy shots, both fighters proudly represented the star-studded DMV boxing scene. The future of boxing in DC, Maryland, and Virginia is looking brighter than ever.

The Controversy

In Round 9, Gervonta Davis was seen taking a knee after a body shot from Lamont Roach. However, instead of ruling it a knockdown, referee Steve Willis allowed Davis—WBA Lightweight Champion—to retreat to his corner and wipe his face with a large white towel. After the fight, Davis explained that he was suffering from the sting of a hair chemical in his eye, which co-trainer Calvin Ford referred to as “ho juice,” and needed to treat the pain.

This controversial moment could have resulted in a draw, with only one judge ruling in favor of Davis.

Official Scores: 115-113, 114-114, and 114-114 in favor of no one.

Overall, THE DMV WON THE NIGHT!!!

With the world watching, the real story from Saturday night’s sold-out event was the showcase of some of the best fighters the DMV has to offer—all on one card. The DMV continues to produce some of the world’s BEST! The event not only being sold out, but when the stats come out, I believe a huge portion of ticket sales came directly from DC, MD and VA. The DMV continues to show up for their own on the big stage.

Lamont introduced the world to No Savage, while ending the night with saying “Welling” on National TV.
