Howard University’s president has announced his retirement in 2024.
According to a school announcement made Wednesday, Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick will retire in June 2024.
Frederick will remain in his role until then “to guarantee a smooth transition of leadership,” according to the announcement.
Frederick took over as interim president in 2013 and was named permanent president in 2014. According to the statement, he has been a member of the Howard community for 34 years.
The release stated that plans for the selection process for the school’s next president will be published “when they become available.”
Howard University recently launched a $785 million endeavor over the next four years to fund a significant rise in new buildings on campus, as well as improvements to existing facilities, under Frederick’s leadership.
According to the institution, under Frederick’s leadership, the school has its largest student enrollment census in its history, as well as greatly improved financial aid for first-time college students.
According to Howard University;
“The four-year graduation rate increased by 20 percentage points to 60 percent, and the six-year graduation rate increased by 8 percentage points to 69 percent” during Frederick’s tenure. Both percentages are the greatest in the history of our university.”
