For the second time this month, Alexandria police are investigating a late-night sexual assault involving a woman attacked by a stranger. On Tuesday, detectives canvassed the Del Ray neighborhood, seeking information or Ring doorbell camera footage of the suspect who assaulted a woman just after midnight. The victim reported the assault occurred near Mount Vernon Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue.
The victim sought treatment for her injuries at a hospital, although the department did not disclose the severity of her injuries.
“Video surveillance is extremely helpful for home security, but also in situations like these, it can provide crucial leads for investigators,” said Tracy Walker, APD’s communication manager. “Any incident of this nature is traumatic, not only for the victim but for others as well. This conversation itself may be triggering for survivors.”
The department clarified that this case is unrelated to another attempted sexual assault two and a half weeks ago in Potomac Yard. In that incident, a woman reported a man attempting to assault her in an alley on Main Line Boulevard around midnight. Officers spotted the suspect and gave chase, but he managed to escape.
