The Montgomery County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCR) issues an apology to the grieving families of three inmates who tragically died in separate incidents within a week at the correctional facility in Clarksburg. These incidents have raised concerns regarding the facility’s healthcare capabilities and inmate safety protocols.

The first case unfolded on Jan. 9, when an inmate in the medical unit of Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Clarksburg was found unresponsive. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the facility’s medical staff and subsequent intervention by MCFRS, the individual passed away the next day at Holy Cross Hospital. The MCPD Homicide Unit is investigating, with no indication of foul play pending confirmation from the medical examiner.

On Jan. 10, another inmate, hospitalized at Holy Cross Hospital since Jan. 3 for significant medical issues, succumbed. The circumstances surrounding this death are currently under investigation, awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause.

The third incident occurred on Jan. 11, involving a medical emergency in a housing unit that led to the death of another inmate. This case is also under investigation by the MCPD Homicide Unit and the Medical Examiner’s Office, with preliminary findings not suggesting foul play.

The DOCR acknowledges the complexities in managing inmates with intricate medical needs and is actively cooperating with the State’s Attorney’s Office, MCPD, and the Medical Examiner’s Office in ongoing investigations to establish the definitive causes of these tragic deaths.
