Mayor Bowser Unveils $400 Million Initiative to Revitalize Downtown D.C.
  • PublishedFebruary 27, 2024

Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced a $400 million initiative on Monday aimed at revitalizing Downtown D.C. Joined by various city leaders, including Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Nina Albert, Bowser outlined two key initiatives designed to breathe new life into the area, irrespective of the Capitals and Wizards’ presence.

The mayor’s comprehensive strategy entails a five-year effort to ignite Downtown D.C.’s resurgence by attracting businesses and streamlining regulations and permits to retain existing ones. Additionally, the plan aims to boost downtown’s residential population from 25,000 to 40,000 by repurposing vacant office space into residential units.

The Downtown Action Plan, crafted by the DowntownDC and Golden Triangle Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), outlines five core elements: prioritizing public safety, fostering a business-friendly environment, expanding the residential base, enhancing transportation infrastructure, and ensuring efficient implementation.

In tandem, the Downtown Public Realm Plan, developed by the District’s Office of Planning, will improve public spaces such as streets, sidewalks, and plazas. This initiative aims to better leverage the city’s significant tourist influx, averaging 16 million visitors annually. To kickstart the effort, the city has earmarked $39 million for the project in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.
