Two people were arrested Tuesday evening near Vice President Kamala Harris’s rally in D.C. for assaulting a police officer.  The arrests occurred around 7:00 p.m. at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue, close to the Ellipse, where Harris spoke. A man and a woman were taken into custody, though the officer involved was uninjured.

D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith issued a statement, expressing appreciation for the peaceful nature of the evening’s events, which allowed many attendees to exercise their First Amendment rights.  Chief Smith acknowledged the cooperative behavior of most attendees, adding that although a few disregarded lawful orders, the majority of the crowd acted respectfully and responsibly.

She thanked MPD officers and partners for ensuring a safe environment and welcomed future visitors to the city.
